Moso - a winter hardy giant bamboo. In spring, when new culms shoot, you can see how fast the bamboo will grow, adult plants may grow around 18 inches a day. Phyll. pubescens, better known as "Moso" bamboo, originated in China (region Hainan) will be 50 - 92 feet tall with culms about 3 - 5 inches thick. Young culms, which are of blue-green color, look as though they were covered with white powder. Leaves hang down like a waterfall. "Moso" can remain healthy even at temperatures as low as -20 degrees Centigrade. Young shoots are edible. In Japan this bamboo is called "noble bamboo".

A Giant in all respects with blue green canes and dense foilage. Moso Bamboo stalks are considered among the biggest and most beautiful. Growing diameter ranges between 3-7 inches and can get over 6o feet tall. Native to China and Japan they have many uses. They are harvested to make many products including furniture and structural support for houses. This variety can grow in zones 6-10. But is ideal for zones 9 and 10. They grow slow at first but can get a few feet long in a matter of months once they are established. Can withstand temperatures of zero degrees once established.

Beautiful checker board color pattern on new shoots! Drought Tolerant, Low Maintenance! One Fargesia robusta plant. Plants are about 3 feet tall now and are very fast growing. Fargesia robusta is a good choice for a clumping bamboo that can create a narrow screen, being taller, more upright, and more robust than Fargesia nitida and Fargesia murielae. This species has dark green foliage and light green culms, with new shoots that are hairy and rusty red upon emergence from the ground in early spring. The culm sheaths persist and soon fade to a light color, almost white, giving the culms a very attractive checkerboard look in the spring through early summer. This bamboo is more sun tolerant than most other Fargesia, but in a warmer climate it would prefer protection from the hot afternoon sun. We have one growing in full sun that has never shown any sign of leaf burn. It is more compact than one would be with shade (about 10 feet tall), and a slightly lighter shade of green.
